Am I an Alcoholic?

Am I an Alcoholic?

Is your drinking a cause for concern? Perhaps your drinking is causing problems at home or at work? The label ‘alcoholic’ is certainly one most people would fail to embrace. If you are being labelled an 'alcoholic' by your family or friends it is likely you are putting up some resistance to the idea. However if you have found this website it is likely you are at least concerned about your drinking.

To help you decide whether you should seek professional advice or not we have put together this handy list of 10 signs which could indicate you are an ‘alcoholic’. If you find yourself answering YES to more than four of the below questions it may indicate you do in fact suffer from an alcohol addiction. Please be as honest as possible when answering the below questions. If you choose to lie or be conservative with the truth then you are only fooling yourself.

Please take your time in answering the below points:

#1           Do you drink when you feel stressed or disappointed with a situation such as an argument with someone you love?

#2           Have you built up a substantial tolerance to drinking alcohol where it would take a good amount of alcohol in order to make you feel ‘drunk’?

#3           Do you often feel unable to recall events which took place during the previous night’s drinking? This is the case even if you did not pass out as a result of your drinking session.

#4           Do you hide your drinking from your friends or family and lie about your drinking? (even little white lies!)

#5           Do you feel restless when alcohol is not available to you?

#6           Are you increasingly restless and eager to consume the first drink of the day?

#7           Has a friend, colleague or family member voiced concern over the amount of alcohol you consume?  You may have jokingly been labelled an ‘alcoholic’.

#8           Have you ever been charged with a drink-driving offence?

#9           Even if not formally charged have you ever driven whilst intoxicated with alcohol?

#10         Do you regularly consume during just one drinking session all of the alcohol stored in your home?

Please be aware the above guidelines are not intended to stand in as a substitution for professional advice. Self-assessment of an alcohol addiction like self-assessment for any illness is likely to be inconclusive or at worst completely inaccurate. For this reason we urge you to seek professional advice. You can do so by calling 0800 140 4690 and speaking to member of our team at Rehab 4 Addiction in complete confidence.
