Preparing yourself for rehab

The first and arguably most important, part of recovery is accepting that you have a problem. This can be very hard for some and can take a long time to come to terms with. Once you have done this, you are ready to reach out and begin the process of referral to rehab.

When preparing for rehab, you should do your best to mentally prepare yourself for the rigors of rehab, which will necessarily involve both physical and psychological discomfort.

You will need to be prepared for the potential physical side effects of alcohol withdrawal as you detox, and to face up to the consequences of your addiction, as well as addressing some of the psychological issues that may lie at the root of your addiction.

Although this process will be painful, it is necessary to heal, and to enter a new life in recovery. The sacrifices you make in rehab will pave the way for a new, fulfilling life, free from the torment of substance abuse. When you’re ready to face this journey, you can reach out by calling us on 0800 140 4690.

How we can help you

When you first call us, one of our friendly Rehab 4 Addiction advisors will talk you through the process of referral, as well as answering any questions that you might have about any aspects of it. Whenever you’re ready, we will begin our initial telephone assessment, in order to find out a bit more about you as a human being.

We might ask some questions about the specifics of your addiction, such as when it started, how impactful it has been on your life, and if there are any triggers or aggravating factors that can make it worse. The purpose of this exercise is to determine which of the rehab facilities on our books would be the most appropriate for you.

This is something that is not widely understood about rehab – there is always a huge emphasis on the specific circumstances of the individual, when determining the right facility for them. Everyone’s addiction is different, and every rehab will place an emphasis on different kinds of treatment. Our job is to get you referred to whichever rehab will give you the best chances of recovery.

Detox and withdrawal

As we mentioned above, a necessary part of your rehab treatment will be a fully supervised detox from drugs and alcohol. If you are suffering from alcohol addiction, detox will likely involve slowly reducing the amount of alcohol that you consume over a number of days, rather than stopping immediately.

Please note that you should never try to detox by yourself – this is highly dangerous, even fatal. It is vital that you have the supervision of medical professionals, which will be the case at any of the rehab centres you may be referred to.

Those professionals will also be there to help you through withdrawal symptoms safely. These symptoms are likely to present themselves as your alcohol consumption lowers.

You may experience headaches, muscle pains, profuse sweating, irritability, low mood, and other undesirable side effects. Rest assured that these symptoms will pass, and that staff will be on hand to help you through it. Nevertheless, this is something that you should be aware of ahead of time.

Types of treatment

There is no ‘cure’ for addiction, so it is not healthy or realistic to think of recovery in those terms. The goal of rehab is to help you to stop using whatever substance you are addicted to, and to give you the tools and mental health education that you need to abstain, and to remain in recovery on an ongoing basis.

At rehab, you will fulfil your own personal treatment plan, which will be provided to you early on in your stay. The idea of this plan is to combine different therapeutic treatments and activities in order to maximise your chances of achieving sobriety and staying in recovery.

This could include sessions on stress management, cognitive behavioural therapy, and relapse prevention techniques, as well as activities such as yoga and meditation.

Towards the end of your time at the rehab, the emphasis will be on relapse prevention, and how best to maximise your chances of staying in recovery after you leave. Just like your treatment plan, this is a highly personalised exercise.

A trained and knowledgeable professional will help you draw up a detailed plan, which might involve avoiding certain people or situations, as well as more proactive steps like attending further group therapy sessions.
