Treatments to expect in a drug and alcohol rehab in Saltash

Early on in the admissions process, you will undergo a short and simple assessment of you and your addiction, usually performed over the phone.

A secondary evaluation of your mental and physical health will take place when you arrive at your chosen rehab, and will be done by a doctor.

These two assessments will support us in determining what your specific needs are, and which treatments will be necessary and beneficial to you. This allows us to create a bespoke treatment plan for you that will accompany you throughout your rehabilitation in Saltash.

Because of this, we are unable to pinpoint exactly which treatments you will participate in at this time. However, we can outline the most common forms of treatment and therapy, some of which you are sure to encounter.

1. Group Therapy

Possibly the most common form of therapy seen in TV shows and films, group therapy involves a group of clients from all different backgrounds sharing stories about the one thing they all have in common: Addiction.

Through group therapy, clients can begin to feel less shame and embarrassment about their situation, and can also feel less alone. Clients can feel like part of a supportive network, and by sharing their stories and hearing others they can not only begin to heal but also make some acquaintances at the same time.

2. Individual Therapy

This form of therapy is the simplest form, involving just one client at a time in a one-on-one setting with a therapist. Individual therapy allows clients to discuss more personal matters that they feel might not be suited to group therapy, or that they are not willing to share with others. It is common in individual therapy to delve into family history and the past of the client, to see how understanding those elements can help them now.

3. Art Therapy

Art therapy uses art as a medium for expression and communication. For those that are unwilling or shy in other forms of therapy, art can be a great way to address difficult emotions or feelings that may otherwise be distressing to discuss.

4. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is a form of therapy that acts as a psychological intervention. It uses mindfulness and acceptance strategies and also various behaviour change strategies. ACT teaches the client to stop and think about an issue before acting, and to react based on chosen values.

5. Motivation Enhancement Therapy (MET)

In a lot of cases, though clients may wish to improve, they do very little to follow through on their goals. MET uses intervention-based counselling techniques to make clients more motivated to change and motivated to continue treatment.

6. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Commonly used in cases of depression or anxiety, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can also be useful in aiding those battling addiction. This form of therapy works to change the way a client thinks and behaves and to help clients deal with overwhelming problems in a more positive way by breaking them down into smaller parts.

CBT works under the knowledge that thoughts, feelings, physical actions are all connected, and by altering our thoughts and feelings we can also change how we react to difficult situations or negative thoughts.

7. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

A form of CBT, DBT is a type of therapy that aims to help clients manage their emotions and feelings and to feel safe. DBT can help clients to regulate their potentially destructive or harmful behaviours and is commonly used in cases of self-harm and suicidal thoughts.

8. Contingency Management

Contingency management is a simple form of addiction treatment that incentivises good behaviour or certain desired results with prizes or money.
