Why should I go to rehab?

A quick web search will tell you that there are many different treatment options when it comes to addiction. Some are available for free, such as 12-step group therapy meetings, and some are available to access at home.

With that in mind, you may be wondering why you should make the considerable investment of time and money that residential rehab demands. The answer is simple – rehab is, by far, the most effective method of treating addiction.

This is because the treatment plan addresses every part of the recovery journey, from managing withdrawal pain during detox, to talking therapies and education, to relapse prevention planning and an aftercare programme.

While private rehab will cost a significant amount of money, it would almost definitely cost a lot more to arrange these treatments separately outside of rehab, not to mention a logistical nightmare.

Rehab combines everything into one convenient care package, which can usually be completed within a month. What’s more, you will have the advantage of recovering in a pleasant, comfortable, secure environment, away from the chaos and everyday stresses of modern life.

Considering all of these factors, it is no wonder that rehab has consistently been proven to be effective at treating substance abuse and other addictions.

What treatments will I go through at rehab?

Broadly speaking, the treatment you will go through at rehab can be split into three stagesdetox, followed by a course of therapy, and finally planning for reintegration into society.

Here’s a little more information about what you can expect from each:

1. Detox

This is a key part of any person’s recovery process – withdrawing safely from their drug of choice. It is important that you do this under proper medical supervision, which you will be able to do at rehab.

The exact method of your detox will vary widely, depending on what drugs you have been using, and the severity and length of your substance abuse.

If you are a drinker, it is likely that you will be guided through a gradual detox where you reduce your intake of alcohol each day, rather than stopping immediately.

This is because going cold turkey from alcohol is extremely dangerous – with that in mind, please do not attempt to detox by yourself, under any circumstances.

Withdrawing from opiates will also need to be carefully managed by the medical team at your rehab clinic. It is likely that you will be given a ‘substitute’ medication to help you along, such as Subutex or Methadone.

This is something that will need to be carefully managed and monitored, so it is important that you are honest with the staff about your drug use – there is no need to withhold any information, as rehab is a confidential and non-judgemental environment.

In total, your detox is likely to take somewhere between 7 and 10 days, after which time you can start your therapy plan.

2. Therapy

At rehab, you will go through a schedule of therapies which will be planned out with your specific needs in mind. This will almost definitely include some form of individual counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, and group therapy sessions.

You will have the chance to really get to the bottom of your issues, which we all have, and figure out how they are impacting you in terms of substance abuse and addiction.

Through therapy, you will gain a fresh perspective on your own struggles and a deeper understanding of how addiction manifests in your life.

The group sessions will also give you a chance to learn from the experiences and perspectives of others, while also sharing your problems with sympathetic people who know what it is like to struggle with the same issues.

A lot of people find this kind of community therapy really helpful, which explains why groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous are so widely attended across the world.

3. Prevention and aftercare

This is arguably the most important part of the whole rehab process – preparing for a successful retransition into the outside world, and ensuring that you minimise your chances of relapse. As you get to the end of your time at the rehab, this will be your focus.

One of the teams at your clinic will help you outline a detailed plan on how to optimise your chances of staying sober for the long term.

Naturally, this will likely include distancing yourself from anyone in your life who is still abusing drugs or alcohol, no matter how close you are to that person. In order to give yourself the best chance of success in recovery, you will need to make this kind of challenging decisions.

Nevertheless, it is important to keep in mind that the plan is made with your best interests at heart. Another aspect of your plan will be encouraging you to take more proactive steps into recovery, such as attending regular group therapy sessions.
