Rehab 4 Addiction

Addiction is a public health crisis that affects millions of people around the UK, either through first-hand experience or that of a loved one. It can have a hugely detrimental effect on every aspect of a person’s life, from their health to their finances, to their personal, professional, and romantic relationships.

If you are looking to break free from a cycle of substance abuse and addiction, the best possible course of action is to attend rehab. Only at a rehab facility will you get access to treatment for every part of addiction, from detox to counselling, to behavioural therapy and education.

Detox, for example an alcohol detox, involves using medications like Librium to ease the withdrawal symptoms of alcohol.

Other medication that might be used includes Acamprosate (Campral®), an antidepressant like nefazodone, desipramine, or imipramine or an opioid antagonist Naltrexone.

It is really important to begin your recovery now, as being an alcoholic is thought to drastically lower your age of death. For those who have been hospitalised, the average age of death for an alcoholic is 47–53 years in men and 50–58 years in women.

Long-term alcohol addiction can result in Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, alcoholic neuropathy, alcohol withdrawal syndrome, alcoholic cerebellar degeneration, alcoholic myopathy and fetal alcohol syndrome.

But you are not alone, alcohol addiction is unfortunately common, with a study by Robin Room, Thomas Babor and Jürgen Rehm revealing that ‘4% of the global burden of disease is attributable to alcohol’, accounting for almost as much death and disability as tobacco and high blood pressure (hypertension) globally.

Rehab 4 Addiction is a specialised service that helps people like you get the help that they need, at a rehab facility close to them. We have links with rehab facilities all over the country, including here in Wokingham and the surrounding areas.

If you are ready to start the referral process, please call us on 0800 140 4690, where a trained Rehab 4 Addiction advisor is waiting to speak to you. If you are not quite ready to reach out, read on for more information on the process.

How do I know if I have an addiction?

Although drug use is widespread in modern society, and alcohol use is almost everywhere, only a minority of people who use either will ever develop an addiction. Having said that, binge drinking is a problem that causes massive damage every weekend – so this begs the question, at what point does excessive drinking or drug use morph into a life-altering addiction?

When considering whether or not you have an addiction, there are a number of questions you can ask yourself. For example, have you gone to lengths to conceal the extent of your substance abuse from friends and family?

Are you unable to go for a long period of time without using? Have your personal or professional relationships deteriorated as a result of your drug or alcohol use?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, the chances are that you have developed a drug or alcohol addiction, and you should seek counselling and treatment. If this is the case, there is no better treatment than a dedicated rehab facility.

Rehab referral – how it works

The journey to recovery starts with you – in the first instance, there needs to be an acceptance and acknowledgment from you that you have an addiction, and are willing to commit to getting better. This takes longer for some people than for others.

When you are ready to take this step, you can call one of our friendly Rehab 4 Addiction advisors on 0800 140 4690. They will be happy to answer any questions that you might have, and when you are ready, they can begin your telephone assessment.

The purpose of this assessment is to find out more about you, and how addiction and substance abuse have affected your life up to this point. We try to get as much information as possible in order to make the right choice as to which rehab would be right for you.

Everyone’s addiction is different and will manifest in a different way. Likewise, every rehab facility around the country will do things slightly differently and will emphasise different kinds of treatment.

When we have gathered a bit more information about your circumstances, we will be able to cross-reference that with our in-depth knowledge on rehab centres in the Wokingham area and pick out the best fit for you.

Once we have decided this, we will be able to tell you exactly how much it will cost, and how long you will need to stay to complete your treatment. Please note that we currently only provide referrals to private facilities, all of which will incur a cost.

What to expect from rehab

There are a lot of misconceptions about what day-to-day life in rehab actually involves, which can often lead to anxiety and apprehension among those who are attending for the first time. In reality, the process of rehab is gradual and will be overseen every step of the way by caring, attentive professionals.

As you might expect, one of the first things you will need to do once you arrive at rehab is to go through detox, in order to rid your body of any remaining illicit substances.

Please note that you should not try to detox by yourself before you get to the facility – this is highly dangerous, and sometimes even fatal. Your detox at rehab will be overseen by qualified medical professionals, who will most likely reduce your consumption gradually over a number of days.

They will also be able to help you through the various side effects of withdrawal, which can include muscle pain, nausea, excessive shaking and sweating, and increased anxiety. These sensations can be deeply unpleasant, but staff will be able to guide you through them safely, and they will soon pass.

From there, you will able to get to the real healing of rehab – your therapy sessions. Your treatment plan will be set out by a professional towards the beginning of your stay, and may include cognitive behavioural therapy, group therapy, solo counselling, and motivational therapy.

You may also be encouraged to take part in mindful activities such as gardening and yoga. The idea of this combination of therapies is that you can get to the underlying root causes of your addiction and address them in a safe environment.

As you come to the end of your therapy schedule, you will sit down with a trained professional at the centre and draw up a relapse prevention plan which is tailored to you and your needs.

This plan will outline areas of your previous life to stay away from where possible, such as a triggering location or a friend who is still in addiction.

It may also include recommendations to carry on attending some kind of therapy, whether that’s 12-step programmes like Alcoholics Anonymous or private individual counselling.
