Rehab 4 Addiction

Aetna Health Insurance is part of the CVS Health Family – an American healthcare company that owns CVS Pharmacy (a huge US retail chain) – with over 170 years of experience (1).

Health insurance companies are beneficial for many individuals, as they allow individuals to partake in vital treatments and other services that improve their overall quality of life.

When it comes to individuals who are struggling with addiction, having health insurance can often be a great way to reduce the pressures and worries that an individual may be facing about their rehabilitation journey.

By reducing this financial burden, individuals will be far more likely to be able to fully commit and be fully motivated in their rehabilitation journey, often meaning that the overall process can be more efficient, effective, and will lead to a lesser risk of relapse.

Does Aetna Health Insurance cover rehabilitation for addiction?

Every healthcare insurance company will be different, and each will have its own different levels of plan, each which will provide different benefits and coverage depending on what the individual requires.

Depending on the individual’s personal healthcare plan through Aetna Health Insurance (2), an individual will be able to access rehabilitative services and treatments, as long as they ensure that they are on the correct plan before beginning any treatments.

As this is also – primarily – a US-based company, these services will also be restricted depending on the individual’s location in the country, as well as the available rehabilitation providers around the individual’s local area.

What are some of the typical forms of treatment that an individual can access through Aetna Health Insurance?

Although not accessible in all areas of the US and the rest of the world, below follow some of the most common services that Aetna Health Insurance may cover depending on the individual’s specific plan:

  • Medical detox – necessary to prepare the individual physically for the remainder of their treatment.
  • Inpatient/residential rehabilitation – rehabilitation that takes place in a dedicated centre, requiring the individual to partake in treatment and care 24/7.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programmes (IOP) & Partial Hospitalisation Programmes (PHP) – necessary in specific situations in which an individual may require emergency/unexpected care.
  • General outpatient therapy – includes individual therapy, family therapy, and group therapy as regular (but not full-time) treatment for addiction.

Is addiction therapy covered by Aetna Health Insurance?

As therapy has been shown to be an incredibly beneficial form of treatment for an individual partaking in addiction care, is it something that Aetna Health Insurance covers (depending on the specific plan that an individual is covered by, as well as the availability of these services in their region).

Different types of therapy offered through Aetna Health Insurance:

  • Individual therapy – one-to-one counselling with one therapist over a set period of sessions which can be extended as necessary.
  • CBT – a specialist form of counselling in which an individual learns to change negative thought patterns that may be related to their addiction behaviours.
  • Group therapy – groups comparable to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) which includes group discussions and learning through sharing and listening.
  • Family therapy – additional support for those around the individual struggling with addiction (often close friends and family) to allow all members of the therapy session to speak about how addiction has impacted them, working toward meaningful change.

Aetna Health Insurance and co-occurring mental health issues

As addiction itself is considered to be a mental health issue, health insurance often covers multiple mental health issues (co-occurring mental health issues) and the simultaneous treatment of this as part of their coverage.

This will, again, depend on the individual’s specific plan but can also be added as optional addons, for example.

Some of these addons may require additional costs and upfront costs, but this will all contribute to the individual’s overall coverage and no addons will be kept on their specific plan if it is not necessary.

Do I need to get a referral for Aetna Health Insurance?

Before an individual can be covered by an Aetna Health Insurance Plan, there are some factors that individuals should consider.

One of the main stages that individuals must progress through before being covered by an Aetna plan is gaining a referral from a medical professional. This is to ensure that their claim is valid, and that the care and support that they require is covered by their future healthcare plan.

Does Aetna Health Insurance cover medically assisted treatment (MAT)?

There are many substances that are commonly used in the treatment of an addiction. This may be at many different stages of the process but does not mean that any are more or less important that those that precede them.

For example, methadone and buprenorphine are often used during the detoxification stage of a heroin addiction as they support an individual through withdrawal, acting as a transitional substance to lower the risk of life-threatening health problems.

Narcan (Naloxone) is another common substance that may be used during the addiction recovery process as it reduces the risk of an overdose fatality with some substances. This could be a life-saving treatment depending on the individual’s case.

All of the substances mentioned previously are covered by Aetna Health Insurance cover, depending on the plan that an individual is covered by – additional addons may be required for an individual to be fully covered for all types of medically-assisted treatments.

What to do now? – Aetna Health Insurance next steps

When an individual is covered for their addiction treatment through Aetna Health Insurance, there are some top tips that they should keep in mind:

  • Check plan details – this includes the Evidence of Coverage and the Summary of Benefits) which outline what an individual is or is not covered for in terms of their addiction treatment.
  • Contact the provider directly – this is to ensure specifics of the individual’s specific plans, as well as to fully verify the coverage of the individual’s plan, including treatments that they may or may not be signed up for in the future.
  • Gain a referral/authorisation for appropriate level of care – this is to verify that the treatment and care that an individual requires is medically necessary.
  • Confirm in-network provider status – any providers that are not authorised by Aetna (i.e., out-of-network providers) may incur additional costs.
