Professor Alison Goate has researched how our genetics make us more or likely to develop an addiction.

This research found that people who have a protein coding gene known as CHRM2 – (muscarinic cholinergic receptor 2) were more likely to use drugs and alcohol.

Eric J. Nestler has also studied these physical factors, focusing on chromatin regulation.

His study discovered that molecules which cause dysregulation within the brain may make us more likely to develop a chronic psychiatric illnesses or addiction.
